Tigers Quest For A Repeat Continues

It always seems like its a close game between the La Junta Tigers and The Classical Academy Titans. In fact the past 3 meetings between the two have been decided by an average of 6 points. These two teams met again on Saturday afternoon in the Colorado Class 2A State Football Quarterfinals. These two met on September 29th, it was La Junta’s homecoming and the Tigers won 21-11. But this quarterfinal game meant a little more; La Junta looked for their 3rd straight trip to the Class 2A Semifinals, while TCA was looking to get there for only the 2nd time in school history. Tiger Stadium was rocking as both teams had huge crowds along for the afternoon.

La Junta got us started with scoring in the first quarter. It was Wyatt Buhr who rumbled his way into the end zone for a 12 yard rush with just :13 left in the first.

The extra point from Zach Archuleta was good and the Tigers led 7-0.

No one scored for most of the 2nd Quarter. A TCA punt put La Junta at their own 1-yard line. 6 plays later a Tiger fumble deep in their own territory gave the Titans the ball at the La Junta 15. Cade Bethany found Jenson Hall wide open in the corner of the end zone from 7-yards out with 5:19 left in the 2nd Quarter.

After a Hayden Cooper extra point went through the uprights it was all tied at 7.

Our score would remain 7-7 for the remainder of the first half. We didn’t get another score until midway through the 3rd. It was TCA who struck first to begin the second half. Bethany once again hit Hall, this time on a deep post route. The ball flew 34+ yards through the air as Hall caught it three yards into the end zone in double coverage.

Another Cooper extra point made the score 14-7 in favor of TCA with 6:20 left in the 3rd. That was all the scoring TCA would get on the afternoon as the Tiger defense stepped up big the rest of the way

La Junta got the ball back and drove down the field and just 4 minutes later this happened…

That score came with 2:07 left in the 3rd Quarter. An Archuleta extra point made the score 14-14. But La Junta wasn’t done they would score yet again before the game ended. The 3rd Quarter ended with La Junta and The Classical Academy tied at 14. The Titans started the 4th Quarter with the ball but would quickly give it to La Junta on a punt. The Tigers would then punt the ball back to TCA. Just a one play later the Tigers had the ball back off an interception by Mitch Peabody. The Tigers had the ball on the Titan 29.

6-plays leater we had our final score as Nuschy got in once again to put a stamp on a great day by the Senior. A 5-yard scamper put La Junta on top for good.

An Archuleta extra point put the Tigers up 21-14. La Junta would get an interception as the horn went off to end the game by Zach Archuleta and La Junta would defeat TCA for the second time this year.

*QUICK FACT: La Junta has defeated TCA all 7 times they have played each other since 2004.*
